Defining Destiny by Deanna Chase
Publication date: February 20th 2014
Genres: New Adult, Paranormal Romance

Book Blurb:

When destiny fails…

Singer-songwriter Lucy Moore thought her life was perfect. At just twenty-one, she’s already met her soul mate and together they’ve landed a recording contract. But when her father dies and the love of her life betrays her in more ways than one, she returns home to pick up the pieces. On the shores of Mendocino, California, Lucy has some decisions to make. Should she start a solo career? Or should she leave it all behind for some semblance of normalcy in the quiet town she grew up in? And what about Seth, the tortured artist who always seems to be there when she needs him?

Seth Keenan has demons of his own. Eighteen months ago, he was involved in a horrific accident that he never talks about. His career as an accomplished oil-paint artist has been abandoned, replaced by the buzz of his tattoo gun. And women—well, he never sticks around for longer than a few hours of pleasure… until he meets Lucy. After one evening of listening to her seductive voice, he’s pulled under. But what about the vow he made to never get close to anyone again?

In a world where everyone has one true soul mate, can these two find love in the arms of each other?

My Review:

In the world the author created, you only have one soul mate, the person you are meant to spend your life with. Cadan is Lucy’s soul mate and they make beautiful music together that touches the heart of anyone who hears them sing. But in this world, your soul mate isn’t necessarily the person who was best for you. Cadan is selfish and didn’t really care about Lucy’s feelings. When he hurts her one time too many, she finally leaves him.

Seth lost his soul mate in a tragic accident. Unable to deal with the guilt he’s feeling, he closes himself off, avoiding commitment and instead has a string of meaningless one night stands.

When Seth see’s Lucy performing at a club, there is an instant attraction between them but Seth is still eaten up with guilt and Lucy still feels a pull for Cadan.

I love a tortured hero, so I adored Seth. I like that Lucy had the courage to initially walk away from a destructive relationship. Their romance is believable and touching and I was rooting for them to end up together. The sex scenes were hot but not overly graphic.

I had mixed feeling towards Lucy’s best friend Jax. She was jealous of Lucy and attracted to Seth, I wouldn’t want her as my best friend.

I think there is potential for a series involving the side characters.

Although this is a paranormal romance, I recommend it for contemporary romance fans also because the paranormal aspect was just a small part of the story.

    Author

Michelle Abbott lives in the UK and hates describing herself in 3rd person.

She writes new adult romance about heroes who fight against the odds and are protective of their girl.

She's an avid reader of romance, is addicted to coffee and loves wine and chocolate, so yeah, not the most healthy eating and drinking habits :-) She spends way too much time online when she should be writing. She collects teddy bears and occasionally knits a couple of rows on a sweater she started years ago, which she may eventually finish in time to wear for her funeral :-)
